The Art Nouveau style started in the late 1800s and was over by the First World War. It was the style of the age--seen on public buildings and advertisements, inside private homes and outside street cafes--adorning the life of the city. It was a backlash against the ugliness and grime of the industrial age and rapid urban growth.
